Chapter Six

Trey

Mondays always drag on. I have a class in the morning then go straight to the lab and work until I can’t think straight. It’s only seven thirty when I finally step out of the building and take my first breath of fresh air in eight hours. I’d normally stay until nine or ten but I skipped lunch and my stomach won’t allow me to go any longer.

I briefly consider hitting the vending machine for a bag of chips and some Skittles but I’m in the mood for Chinese. I’m just sliding into the front seat of my Chevy Volt when my phone buzzes.

It’s Luka. I’m surprised he hasn’t reached out to me sooner. I figured they’d be up my ass for details on Saturday morning. Since they weren’t, I have to assume they spoke to Georgie.

YOU HUNGRY?

YES. JUST LEAVING WORK NOW.

CHINESE? I’M GOING 2 C LINDA. MEET ME @ CHEAP CHINESE IN 15?

I consider it. Luka used to work at the best Chinese takeout place in the city. I eat there at least twice a week and now that I’m thinking about it, I’m craving their egg rolls.

YEAH. I’LL BE THERE.

Luka is good company. It’ll be nice to see him without Brad teasing me about my night with a hooker. I cringe at the thought. Georgie isn’t just a hooker. He’s actually a sweet guy that I could totally be friends with so it’s not fair to think of him like he’s a common whore. From what I know of him, he’s a good man that will make someone very happy someday.

When I walk into the restaurant, I’m assaulted by the spicy aromas that get my stomach growling every time. Luka is already sitting at a table near the register with the owner standing over him.

“Trey, hi.” He waves me over. “You know Linda, the owner, right?”

I nod and smile. “We’ve met a few times. Always a pleasure.”

Her cheeks pink up as she motions for me to sit down. “Sit, sit. I’ll be back with something special.”

I raise a questioning eyebrow to Luka. He just smiles and shrugs. “No idea. She’s always feeding me her experiments. You allergic to anything?”

“Not that I know of.” I take a drink of the water at my seat. “Just how experimental are we talking?”

Luka laughs. “Not too bad.” Then he shudders and makes a face. “Usually.”

I take a look at the empty chair next to Luka. “Brad on his way?”

He shakes his head. “No, unfortunately. He’s helping Steve build a dog kennel in his backyard so he’ll be home late tonight.”

I nod just as Linda comes back with two bowls of salad and a noodle plate. I can’t quite identify everything but after one bite, I know it’s some kind of shrimp dish. “Mmm, that’s good.”

Luka nods his head in agreement. “Told ya.”

The ding of a bell gets our attention. I turn toward the front door and watch a guy walk in. He’s not just any guy. He looks like he stepped
